The death of Georgia's former president in prison could be a reason for the European Parliament to deny him EU candidate status.
In his Twitter account, Polish MEP Jacek Saryusz-Wolski commented on the situation around Georgia's accession to the European Union. According to him, the European Parliament may decide to deny Tbilisi EU candidate status if former Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili dies in prison.
"The European Parliament will never vote for Georgia's EU membership if the former president remains in custody and dies in prison," Sariusz-Wolski said.
Earlier it was reported that arsenic, mercury and lead were found in the body of the former head of state. It is assumed that Saakashvili had received radioactive or chemical poisoning. However, according to the Georgian Ministry of Justice, nothing was found in the politician's body that exceeded the permissible norm.
