The Peruvian government declared a state of emergency Saturday in the capital Lima and several other regions because of demonstrations against President Dina Boluarte that have left at least 42 people dead in the past five weeks.

The measure, in effect for 30 days, allows the army to intervene to maintain order and entails the suspension of several constitutional rights, such as freedom of movement and assembly and the inviolability of the home, according to a decree published Saturday night in the official gazette.

More than a hundred roadblocks blocked traffic throughout Peru on Saturday, mostly in the south of the country, the epicenter of the protests, and around Lima. On Saturday, however, authorities reopened the international airport in Cuzco, which is vital to Peru's tourism industry.

The protests erupted after the December 7 resignation and arrest of Socialist President Pedro Castillo, accused of attempting a coup d'état by dissolving parliament, which was preparing to remove him from power.
